A Biblical View of the Church

Throughout time and cultures, values and priorities often shift. However, the biblical perspective of the church stands as a timeless and unwavering beacon of hope and purpose. The Almaden Valley Church of Christ welcomes you to explore the profound significance of the church in the Christian faith.

The Bible teaches that the church is not a physical structure or building, but a living entity—the body of Christ. Each member plays a vital role, contributing to the overall health and functionality of the body. This metaphor emphasizes the connection and unity of believers in fulfilling God's purposes.  We are together submitting to the leadership of our head, Christ Jesus.

1 Corinthians 12:27 - "Now you are the body of Christ, and individual members of it."

There is a clear call to community and fellowship within the church. The gathering of believers is not just a tradition, but a source of encouragement, love, and support. It is within the community of the church that believers find strength and motivation through the words of the Bible and the faith of others, and to live out their faith in a world that often challenges their convictions.

Hebrews 10:24-25 - "And let us watch out for one another to provoke love and good works, not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching."

The church, according to the apostle Paul, serves as the pillar and foundation of the truth. In a world filled with varying perspectives and ideologies, the church holds firm to the unchanging truths found in the word of God. It provides a moral compass and a spiritual foundation for individuals seeking a solid footing in the midst of life's uncertainties.  Because we have Christ as not only the head of our church, but the example of His life undergirding all of our efforts.

1 Timothy 3:15 - "… I have written so that you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth."

The Great Commission, as outlined in gospel of Matthew, underscores the mission of the church to reach out to the world with the message of salvation. The church is not meant to exclusive but rather a dynamic force impacting our families, neighbors, and communities. Through service and outreach, the church extends the love and grace of Christ to those who may not have encountered it otherwise.

Matthew 28:19-20 - "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

Galatians 6:10 – “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us work for the good of all, especially for those who belong to the household of faith.”

God designed us, He designed community, and He designed His church. It is a group of believers that together nurture and support each other, a body that functions with unity and purpose, a pillar of truth in a world often clouded by confusion, and an agent of change through outreach and service. The Almaden Valley Church of Christ invites you to explore, grow, and find purpose within the context of this biblically defined church family.
